Although most aspects of financial planning are regulated by the FSA, surprisingly, some solutions that might be used in the field of funding long term care (e.g. home reversion plans) are not. What may be yet more surprising is that, because of a tightening up of "competency rules", even most independent financial advisers are no longer authorised to provide advice in matters relating to long term
care!
If a plan is unregulated, advisers recommending it do not have to be financial services qualified or even have to demonstrate any particular level of knowledge or competence, but even if you seek out an independent financial adviser, unless you also check that he or she has passed the higher level Long Term Care examination and that they have maintained professional development to ensure competence, you cannot be sure that they should be advising you and have detailed and up to date knowledge about all matters and options relevant to long term care planning.
